Grape of the Week: Furmint

Furmint is a white grape variety that is one of the six types of grape used to produce the world famous and royally promoted Tokaji wine.  Furmint tends to be the primary grape in most Aszu Tokaji wine as it provides good levels of both sugar and acid and is, frequently prone to botrytis or “noble rot”, the beneficial mold which partially desiccates the grape and produces a very concentrated sweetness in wine.

November is famous, (or infamous, depending on your opinion) for young, early-release wines, for Beaujolais Nouveau. The young wine has become quite a commercial success exported out of the Beaujolais region of France. But other areas produce early-release wines as well, and they are definitely worth exploring.

Beaujolais Nouveau of November fame is made exclusively with the Gamay grape. The grape, the full name of which is Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, is believed to have originated near the village of Gamay in east-central France as far back as the mid-14th century. A Mashed Potato Match

One of my favorite dishes from our family Thanksgiving is mashed potatoes. But so many rich flavors in the potatoes, topped with gravy and even more spices, makes the lowly potato a difficult dish to pair wine with, not even counting the seven other side dishes and turkey that are crowding the plate as well.

 


Gewürztraminer is a fussy grape, particularly in regards to soil and climate. Its rich aromas and tendency toward sweetness has put off some wine drinkers, but a well-balanced Gewürztraminer with developed acidity can match those rich aromas with decadent and exotic flavors that can stand up to spicy and sharp foods that overpower other wines.


Just as France has its regions and Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) areas, so too does the United States have its American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). Some are famous such as Napa or Sonoma, others less so. Perhaps one of the least famous is the sole AVA currently in Idaho, Snake River Valley.


Grape of the Week: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is one of the more ancient of the modern grapes, probably only one or two generations removed from the wild vitis sylvestris, which may help to account for the challenges in cultivation and winemaking with this grape.  The earliest written record we have for this grape is from the 1st century AD when Columella, mentions it in his De Rustica, one the most important and well known Roman agriculturalist and vintners.

Each week, we focus on a different wine grape. This week's focus: zinfandel, one of the most popular grapes grown in the United States and considered "America's vine and wine."


I watched Sideways again the other night and Miles’ explanation to Maya does make Pinot Noir sound like something special. I have always liked the grape in its variety of forms but I wanted to do a little checking on whether or not Miles was right. Essentially the answer is yes.


Wine has always been a difficult luxury item to purchase online. Laws governing alcohol sales differ from country to country, and in the United States, wine sales between states—and in some cases, even between municipalities—are highly regulated.
